Ganden Tripa Authorizes Dorje Shugden Pratitioners to represent the Gelugpa tradition

"I confer upon Trijang Buddhist Institute the authority to represent and transmit the teachings of the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism in the United States."

"I confer upon Trijang Buddhist Institute the authority to represent and transmit the teachings of the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism in the United States."

In April of this Year, the Ganden Tripa, spiritual head of the Gelugpa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, wrote a letter authorizing Trijang Buddhist Institute of Northfeild Vermont to “represent and transmit the teachings of the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism in the United States.”

He also stated catacorically that Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche (“having been educated in the teachings of the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism, and officially recognized by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama as being the incarnation of the late Trijang Dorje Chang, Tutor to the 14th Dalai Lama and one of the greatest twentieth-century Buddhist masters of this order…”) is fully qualified to act as director of TBI.

As it is widely known that Trijang Rinpoche has steadfastly refused to abandon the Dorje Shugden practice that was so precious to his predecessor, this letter seems somewhat remarkable. The Ganden Tri, holder of the throne of Je Tsongkhapa and leader of the Gelugpa tradition, authorizes a famous Dorje Shugden Lama and his institute to represent and transmit the teachings of the Gelugpas?

If he feels that Dorje Shugden practitioners “represent the teachings of the

Gelug order,” this clearly indicates that Dorje Shugden practice is a valid part of the Gelug tradition, does it not? At very least, it gives lie to the idea, much promoted on the internet of late, that Dorje Shugden practitioners are a fringe group who do not represent mainstream Buddhist practice.

He also wrote ”Thus authorized, Trijang Buddhist Institute is dedicated to preserving, representing, and transmitting the Buddhist teachings of the Gelug tradition.”

I find it noteworthy that has authorized a Dorje Shugden lama to “preserve” the teachings. Perhaps he, too, is concerned that certain aspects of the precious Ganden Tradition that have been passed down master to disciple for hundreds of years, will be wiped out if someone doesn’t do something.

i am thankful for the inclusive insight of the Gadan Tripa, and the courage & wisdom that he demonstrated in making such a broad statement.I am thankful that the pure Kadam linage continues to find its way to flourish to benefit all beings.

This is wonderful. The Ganden Tripa is the head of the Gelugpa tradition, the Dalai Lama is not. What the Ganden Tripa says (should) go. Taken together with the growth of the new Dorje Shugden monasteries outside Sera and Ganden monasteries, Serpom Norling and Shar Gaden, it looks like the tide is turning. Actually, I must depart from you on this point. I no longer feel that the Ganden Tri is the head of the tradition. Please consider this carefully…If what the Ganden Tripa says should go, what will we do when the Dalai Lama expels this Ganden Tripa and appoints a new one who despises our protector? However, I agree that the tide is turning, and I delight in and support the Ganden Tripa’s latest statement! Three cheers!

Baby, you seem to be very confused.

The Ganden Tripa acknowledged the spiritual authority of Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche, he did in no way acknowledge Shugden practitioners to represent the Gelug school.

Your post is misrepresenting and contorting the facts. Also you should know, that Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche is moderate in Shugden worship, he does not force anybody to practice it and leaves the decision to the other person.

You also should know that Kelsang Gyatso, head of NKT, does not acknowledge Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche to be the reincarnation of Trijang Rinpoche and that there are no contacts between NKT and TBI or Kelsang Gyatso and his former teacher.

Also you should know that Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche is concerned himself about fanatical Shugden followers and escaped them when they tried to murder his assistant, with the aim to put the blame for the assassination into the shoes of the Dalai Lama. and the TGIE.

{Story snipped due to lack of verifiability]

Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche concluded his message urging the followers of Dorje Shugden to stop seeking him. He said: “I do not wish to be in touch with you…”

After this statement Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche moved to the United States of America, where he lives only with his closest students.

Since Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche states that “These are not lies, but true facts which I want everyone to know.” I think it is appropriate to quote here what he said himself in the interview with the Dharamsala radio station.

“Scholars and Yogis please check!” You’re funny!

There are a lot of pseudo-scholars and pseudo-yogis nowadays. Real scholars and yogis do not even read such a non-sense as the post above offers.

    Hello “anon”

The Ganden Tripa acknowledged the spiritual authority of Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche, he did in no way acknowledge Shugden practitioners to represent the Gelug school.

Apparently you need to read his letter more carefully. He explicitly authorized TBI, which is nothing more than Dorje Shugden Practitioners, to represent the Gelug “order” in the United States. I’m sorry if you find it awkward, these are simply the facts.

Your post is misrepresenting and contorting the facts.

    please see above

Also you should know, that Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche is moderate in Shugden worship, he does not force anybody to practice it and leaves the decision to the other person.

If that is the definition of “moderation in worship,” then so too are the NKT, DGTL, Rabten Choling, Shar Ganden, Serpom Norling, and indeed all other Dorje Shugden supporting organizations moderate. No-one is ever forced to “worship” the protector.

You also should know that Kelsang Gyatso, head of NKT, does not acknowledge Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche to be the reincarnation of Trijang Rinpoche and that there are no contacts between NKT and TBI or Kelsang Gyatso and his former teacher.

This seems entirely irrelevant to the point that apparently, the Ganden Tripa feels that Dorje Shugden practitioners are perfectly valid to “represent and transmit” the Gelug Dharma. I’m sure Geshe-la rejoices whenever anyone has the good sense to recognize that Dorje Shugden practitioners have been among the cream of the Gelug Sholars and Yogis of the past several hundred years.

Also you should know that Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche is concerned himself about fanatical Shugden followers and escaped them when they tried to murder his assistant, with the aim to put the blame for the assassination into the shoes of the Dalai Lama. and the TGIE.

That sounds terrible. I wonder if it is true? If you have some proof of this, then I would join you in lamenting the treachery of the delusions, and the things they can do to the minds of poor mother sentient beings longing to find peace.

{Long story snipped due to lack of verifiability and general irrelevance]

Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche concluded his message urging the followers of Dorje Shugden to stop seeking him. He said: “I do not wish to be in touch with you…”

This is, of course, very silly, as Trijang Rinpoche’s own followers are Dorje Shugden followers. They all do Dorje Shugden puja together at TBI. He has to be in touch with them in order to let them know what time to show up for class and puja. Of course, it is possible that he does not wish to be in touch with certain practitioners, perhaps they are pressuring him inappropriately or making demands he is unable or unwilling to aquiesce to. It is immaterial to the fact that the head of the Ganden Tradition thinks Dorje Shugden practitioner are true Gelugs, true Buddhists, and representative of the order.

After this statement Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche moved to the United States of America, where he lives only with his closest students.

It is precisely through living in the United States that this well known Dorje Shugden practitioner will be able to represent the Gelugpas there.

Since Trijang Chogtrul Rinpoche states that “These are not lies, but true facts which I want everyone to know.” I think it is appropriate to quote here what he said himself in the interview with the Dharamsala radio station.

I don’t want to include the supposed quotation as there is no way for me to verify that it’s contents accurately represent what they say they do.

“Scholars and Yogis please check!” You’re funny!

I confess, it seems to me that you are the one who must be joking, but then we both know that appearances depend on karma, so there is no contradiction. I’m sure we are both hilarious from the right angle… Seriously, though, it is the Sakya throneholder Kunga Lodro who wrote this about Dorje Shugden. He said “Thinking about the name [Nechung] used, ‘Dorje’, Vajra, as in the context of Vajrayana, we can infer that he does not seem to be a protector that was bound to oath and named by glorious Hayagriva or Guru Rinpoche. Scholars and yogis, please check!”

Then he went on to compose ritual prayers to Dorje Shugden in which he explicit refers to him as a Buddha. Delicious.

There are a lot of pseudo-scholars and pseudo-yogis nowadays. Real scholars and yogis do not even read such a non-sense as the post above offers.

Since we know YOU read it, then we know you are no real scholar or yogi. From that we can adduce that you would have no idea what actual scholars and yogis get up to!

Anyway, I’m just playing, friend, i know false modesty when I see it. I wish you all the best in your sincere Dharma practice. May your life be filled with love and peace. :)

Truthaboutshugden! First of all, I want to salute you for your respond to “Anon” above. You approached this matter like a true Dharma debater: clear, logical and most of all compassionate.

It is sad that so many people (through the writings on blogs I have read) are making all matter related to Dorje Shugden so political. I rejoice that there are individuals like yourself who focus more on providing valuable and substantial information for people.

To end, I would like to add that Trijang Rinpoche has joined Shar Ganden Monastery, leaving Gaden Shartse Monastery, where his line of incarnations have been for hundreds of years. This decision must have been a hard one but he still went ahead with it. To me, this act is an open acknowledgement and encouragement of the Dorje Shugden practice.

Thank you again for your article. Much appreciated!

  7. Lee Dhi

Today I just received news that Gaden Tripa joined Shar Ganden Monastery, leaving Ganden Shartse! This 2 of Gaden Tripa’s recent big steps to show Dharma practitioners that Dorje Shugden practice should and must be acknowledged, respected and, if possible, practiced!

I pray for more events like this so that our Protector will return to the forefront of Dharma growth and have Dharma practice flourish all over the world!

  8. Harold

To the best of my research Dorje Shugden is the only deity in the history of Tibetan Buddhism to be expelled.

The Dalai Lama teaches us about the emptiness of all things.

A truly realized master would see no difference between a Buddha and a dog.

They teach there is no good no bad, no wrong no right.

Yet the Dalai Lama teaches their is.

There is no difference between the Dalai Lama or Shugden. They are both empty.
